How to use a 4 letter monogram
So, you have a person or a business with 4 names and is wanting you to monogram something for them. But where do you begin? What is the correct order to place the 4 letters? We are all very familiar with the order of the initials used in a traditional 3 letter monogram, but how do we order 4 letter monograms?
The first thing to remember is, other than businesses, there are no rules when it comes to the correct order. But there are several factors to take into consideration.
For starters, I would ask the person/business how they want the initials displayed. What makes the most sense to them? How do they want them to look? What order do they think looks the best?
If they do not offer any guidance, here are some guidelines to consider. For the purposes of this discussion, I will be using F (first name/s), M (middle name/s), L (last name/s):
- Person with two first names: FMLF or FFML
- Person with two middle names: FMML or FMLM
- Person with two last names: FLLM or FMLL
- For a business or school, the most common sequencing is in the order of the name. For example, the North Carolina School of the Arts order would be NCSA. Newport News Heating and Plumbing would be NNHP.
I hope this gives you some helpful guidelines to consider when creating a 4 letter monogram. Remember, there are no rules. Do what makes the most common sense!
